There are a great number of possible outdoor activities on Valentia and nearby. The island is popular with divers as well as those who wish to fish both from the island and sea
fishing.
The island has its own 9 hole golf course and also a pitch and put for the amateur. |
Valentia has beautiful beaches. One of the popular beaches is at Glanleam which is fairly close to the
cottage, 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot.
Glanleam House was the former home of the Knight
of Kerry but has been in private ownership for some years. The sub tropical gardens at Glanleam are now open
to the public and are well worth a visit.

There are some excellent restaurants
on and near to the island, Boston's Bar in Knightstown is worth a visit, as is O'Neils bar at the ferry boarding point just outside Cahirciveen. The Moorings at Portmagee also has an excellent menu.
Visitors return to Valentia time after time not only to soak up its tranquillity and hospitality but also to enjoy the exploration of the island and its history. |
The Skellig Experience near the bridge to Portmagee is a permanent exhibition illustrating the history, archeology and geology of the island and the Skelligs.
Valentia Island is the closest point in the British Isles to America and it is here that the first transatlantic cable was laid. Until the early 1900's, the quarry to the north of the island supplied top quality slate for buildings all over the world, including the Houses of Parliament in London. Slate is no longer quarried and the quarry is now a grotto to Our Lady and mass is regularly held there. |
